So, the wait is over and the LPGA has finally announced its new Commissioner. The news was unexpected because of the long recruiting process they’ve been through and mainly because it won’t be Jonathan Ward not Pete Bevacqua who will assume the position.
The new kid on the block is Michael Whan, who has worked for worldwide companies such as Procter & Gamble. The announcement came in as a surprise since his name was never revealed during the process and it was Bevecqua whoapparently had the lead in the Commissioner race.
The 44 year old executive left Mission-Itech Hockey, where he developed as President, to embrace a new challenge in his career.
Whan is close to golf, he worked at the Marketing Department of TaylorMade Adidas and Wilson golf. In press conference he said, “it’s rare to work for an organization that combines all the passions in your life, but with the LPGA, I feel I’ve been presented with the unique opportunity to do just that”.
The new Commisioner will assume his position in January 4th. meanwhile Marty Evans will continue to serve as Commissioner.
Whan’s hire is one of the most important in LPGA’s history, since next year’s schedule has only 18 events under contract; other tournaments are not confirmed yet. Nevertheless the Board of Directors expect to secure between 22 and 25 for 2010.
